Events

Summer Camp

Summer camp is a week-long trip done by Troop 73 every year. Most years, the troop goes to Camp Marin Sierra in Nevada City, California. The scouts leave on Sunday and return the next Saturday. They spend the week advancing their rank and/or earning merit badges. This event is a favorite among many scouts in Troop 73 and is a great opportunity for them to meet scouts from other troops! 

Relay For Life

Relay for Life is a 24-hour event run by the American Cancer Society. Every year, Troop 73 attends the event helping with opening/closing flags, trash cleanup, setup, tear down, and other various duties. The troop also makes and serves cobbler for those attending the event in the evening. In the morning, the troop makes breakfast for those in attendance.

Scouting for Food

Scouting for Food is a council-wide event done by packs and troops across Marin. The event takes place across two weekends. The first weekend scouts go out and hang door hangers on people's doors asking for donations of non-perishable foods. The next weekend the scouts go back through the neighborhoods and collect the food that is left out. After collecting the food, the troop delivers it to the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank.

Code Red

Code Red is a first aid competition where troops compete against each other. Each troop has a competition team and a team that runs a scenario. The competition teams go through each scenario and are graded based on what they do right or wrong. The competition team with the most points wins the event. The scenario team comes up with a scenario and the injuries endured in the scenario, there is also a vote at the event to determine which troop had the best scenario.

Scout Sunday

Scout Sunday is the way that Troop 73 gives back to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. Good Shepherd Lutheran Church is the church that charters the troop. At Scout Sunday, the troop greets people and helps with various things during the church service.

Family Fiesta

Family Fiesta is an event that is staffed by troops in Marn Council and attended by packs from Marin Council. The troops run different stations around Marin Council's Camp Tamarancho. Troop 73 runs the rock wall. The boy scouts help the cub scouts climb the rock wall without hurting themselves, as well as putting the rocks on/taking the rocks off the wall at the beginning and end of the event.

Caroling at the Cedars

Caroling at the Cedars is an event done by Troop 73 each year. The Cedars is a home for people who are developmentally challenged. The scouts distribute gifts to the residents and sing Christmas carols to them. Scouts are asked to bring three gifts, one male, one female, and one unisex.

Rocknasium

Rocknasium is an overnight event all about rock climbing. Troop 73 travels to an indoor rock climbing facility, and the scouts can stay up all night rock climbing. The scouts also have the opportunity to get the rock climbing merit badge.

Wilderness Survival

Wilderness survival is an overnight event where scouts are brought to a secret location with only the ten essentials. The scouts spend the night, have to make fire, and build a shelter. The event offers the opportunity to earn the Wilderness Survival merit badge, and valuable experience. 

Winter Camp

Winter camp is an event where scouts go up to Marin Sierra, and spend a few days staying in one of the lodges. While at Marin Sierra, the scouts can play in the snow, and bond with each other. One of the days the troop goes to a ski resort for a day of skiing and/or snowboarding. 

Philmont

Philmont is a scout ranch located in Cimarron New Mexico. On the trip, the scouts spend seven days hiking between 50 and 100 miles. The scouts stop along the way to do activities such as blacksmithing, rock climbing, repelling, and shooting muzzle loading rifles.

Klondike

Klondike is an event that takes place at Marin Sierra. The event is a competition, similar to code red, between troops that takes place in the snow. It is a one-day event where the scouts can expect to be in the snow and in the cold. 

Eagle Projects

Eagle projects are the final step scouts make before their Eagle Board of Review. Eagle projects are generally construction or volunteer projects that benefit an organization such as a church or a school or provide a teaching experience for kids. The eagle project is a scout's final test before earning the highest rank in scouting, eagle.

Cub Scout Bridging

Troop 73 helps with cub scout bridging when scouts bridge from a cub scout pack to troop 73. At the bridging ceremony, the scouts put a Troop 73 neckerchief and slide, as well as green BSA epaulets on the bridging scouts. The bridging ceremony is a big step in a young scout's scouting career.

Arrow Of Light Hike

The Arrow Of Light hike is a hike that is put on by Troop 73 to introduce cub scouts to how boys scouts work. Not only is this a fun event, but it also works as a recruiting event. The Cub Scouts get to spend time and talk with Troop 73 scouts so they can learn more about the program! During the hike, the cub scouts learn how to use the count-off system, as well as learn fun environmental and first-aid facts.

4th of July Parade

Every 4th of July, Troop 73, and the Novato Cub Scouts carry a massive American flag down Grant Ave. in the Novato 4th of July parade.

Court Of Honor

A court of honor is held every few months to recognize scouts that have earned merit badges, gotten special awards, or advanced in rank. The biggest court of honor of the year is usually held in August after summer camp as summer camp is where most advancements are made.

Conservation Project

Every year around Earth Day, a conservation project is held at Rodeo Beach in the Marin Headlands. In this project we collect trash all around the beach and the lagoon. We also move large pressure treated logs away from the water to prevent them from polluting the lagoon.

Memorial Flag Planting

At this event, the scouts visit the cemetery to pay their respects to the fallen soldiers by posting American flags on their graves. This event takes place on memorial day every year.

Bike and Barbeque

Starting in 2024, the bike and barbeque is a fun event where scouts get to ride bikes around with friends at Stafford Lake Bike Park. There is also a barbeque that is held during the event while scouts are riding around.

Campouts

There are many campouts every year held by the troop. They are located mostly at Camp Tamarancho and it allows scouts to get requirements to rank up. The scouts. We also snow camp during the klondike event in the winter.
